Did you know that Charleston`s iconic She-Crab Soup was born right here at the John Rutledge House Inn!

In the 1920s, Mayor Robert Goodwyn Rhett, a resident of the inn, created this special recipe. Legend has it that the mayor instructed his butler to "do something special" with the crab soup for a dinner honoring President and Mrs. Taft. By substituting the richer "she-crab" eggs for those of the "he-crab," the butler created a creamy, golden soup that has delighted locals and tourists for decades.
